About Tulsa:
Incorporated in 1898, Tulsa lies in the heart of "Green Country", a fertile forested region of rolling hills in northeastern Oklahoma. Located in Osage/Rogers/Tulsa Counties, Tulsa is the second largest city in the state, located 90 miles northeast of the state capital, Oklahoma City. With a population of almost 400,000, Tulsa’s greater Metropolitan Area was estimated to have a population of nearly 1 Million, and in 2005 Tulsa was selected as one of "America's Most Livable Large Cities."
Once one of the world’s most important oil centers, Tulsa still retains its long-used nickname, “Oil Capital of the World,” and today is the cultural and arts center of Oklahoma, boasting several world-renowned art museums and the third largest instance of art deco architecture in the country, behind New York City and Miami, Florida. Many of Tulsa's downtown skyscrapers and also entire neighborhoods were constructed in the art deco style of architecture. Described as "America's Most Beautiful City" in magazines during the mid-20th century, the nickname is still used to typify Tulsa's public art, its art deco architecture, its unusually large park system, and its location in the rolling green hills and wooded terrain of the Ozarks foothills.
Tulsa has a Southern charm, Eastern elegance and Western flair due to its unique history. Some of the city’s Indian ancestors, forced in the 1800s along a “trail of tears” from the southeastern United States to what is now eastern Oklahoma, brought Southern traditions along with their Indian culture. Tulsa’s Western style was born when early settlers discovered the city sat on some of the best cattle country available. Many quickly became ranchers, and some of their descendants today are still working cowboys. In August 1882, the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway, later called the Frisco, completed the extension of its line to Tulsa to serve the cattle business, the city's first industry. Tulsa, during this time, was referred to as "Tulsey Town." In the early 1900s, the discovery of oil, and the dreams of those who came in search of it, fueled Tulsa. Many of the risk-takers, including Rockefeller, Skelly and Getty, came from places like New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut bringing Eastern elegance and a taste for culture and refinement. Oil brought the wealth that turned Tulsa from a cow town to a cosmopolitan city with luxurious homes, extravagant hotels, and an appreciation for the arts. Wealthy families poured their oil fortunes into new construction throughout the city, primarily with art deco architecture. Greenwood was another community that flourished in Tulsa during the oil boom. Known nationally as "Black Wall Street," the neighborhood was a hotbed of jazz and blues in the 1920s.
Today, Tulsa is still an important energy and oil center, but other industries have taken the spotlight including aerospace and aviation, banking, telecommunications, high technology, manufacturing, construction, healthcare, education and transportation. The city contains a widely diversified business base and boasts of low unemployment. The city is home of six private hospitals, an international airport, and 14 institutions of higher education with options ranging from community college and vocational studies to undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs at both public and private universities. Tulsa is a great opportunity to experience a delightful mix of rich culture, colorful history, terrific shopping, and lively nightlife. From the Tulsa Ballet and Tulsa Opera, to Broadway plays and musicals at the Performing Arts Center, to the Philbrook Museum and the largest collection of Western American art at the Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa’s rich cultural legacy greatly enhances the citizen’s quality of life.
Covering just over 186 square miles, Tulsa’s communities take on a personality much their own. Downtown is known for its art deco architecture and office buildings and contains Tulsa's largest entertainment and convention venues. Midtown Tulsa is a largely residential district occupying land just south of Downtown on the east bank of the Arkansas River stretching further eastward. This area, Tulsa's historical residential core, consists mostly of large upscale homes built in the early 1900's with architecture ranging from art deco to Greek Revival. South Tulsa was mostly undeveloped before the 1980s, but now contains Tulsa's largest shopping base, mostly in the form of chain retail stores, after 20 years of continuous construction booms. Upscale homes, malls and some of the city's most prestigious schools are located in this hilly and secluded area. West Tulsa, a largely residential area occupying the entire city area west of the Arkansas River, has some of the city's largest parks and wilderness reserves, which are the site of many of the city's annual events. The area is also a testament to Tulsa's history in the oil industry, and still contains several large oil refineries. North Tulsa includes the jazzy Greenwood Historical District, the internationally famous Gilcrease Museum, the Tulsa International Airport, the Tulsa Zoo, the Tulsa Air and Space Museum, and the nation's third-largest municipal park, Mohawk Park. Tulsa has a feeling that is Southern, Eastern and Western all at once. Residents can cosmopolitan flavor at the same time they delight in its small-town friendliness. The city is big enough to have everything one might need, but small enough to make everyone feel right at home.
