About Sapulpa:
“Get Your Kicks on Route 66” is the theme song for thousands of Americans and International visitors traveling to Sapulpa. Located just 7 miles southwest of Tulsa, Sapulpa covers 24 square miles and could be known as the heart of Route 66. Throughout the year, the city plays host to visitors experiencing the nostalgia and myth of Route 66, affectionately know as the Mother Road. Sapulpa’s historic downtown district is home to several business buildings and churches that date back to the 1920s and has Ghost Signs that are reproductions of commercial advertisements painted on the sides of the building on which they originally appeared. Sapulpa Main Street provides a historic walking tour for those wishing to walk and visit the historic spots of the city’s past.
The character of Sapulpa was shaped by three historic factors – Indians, railroads and oil. The area’s first permanent settler, Chief Sapulpa, arrived in Indian Territory around 1850 and established a trading post about one mile southeast of present day downtown Sapulpa. The Atlantic and Pacific railroad line extended to the area in 1886 calling the town “Sapulpa Station” in honor of Chief Sapulpa who had befriended the railway workers. In 1889 a post office was opened and the town was incorporated in 1898. The greatest period of growth came about in 1905 with the discovery of Glenn Pool oilfield located six miles southeast of Sapulpa. The oil boom, the Frisco railroad, and the addition of two brick and four glass plants all combined to turn the town into a bustling community of 20,000 in the mid-1920s. Today Sapulpa has over 120 manufacturers employing approximately 5,000 workers, and the population was estimated to be almost 20,000 in 2003.
Today the city located in Creek County and covering 18.6 square miles, offers many things for its residents including housing ranging from charming, historic structures dating from the 1920s to contemporary upscale housing additions. Sapulpa has many recreational facilities for all ages including several golf courses and trout fishing at Pretty Water Lake. The Sapulpa City library, one of the original Andrew Carnegie Libraries, offers a Genealogy Divisions, attracting people from all across the country.
