About Sand Springs:
Covering 20 square miles and set among the rolling hills and wooded terrain along the Arkansas River, Sand Springs is the most visually appealing community in the Tulsa area. The city offers natural beauty and convenience to its residents. Incorporated in 1912 and located seven miles west of downtown Tulsa on the Keystone Expressway (US Highway 412 / 64 / State Highway 51), the city currently has a population of approximately 18,000. Sand Springs' geographical location is perfect for commuters. Major roads and expressways make the drive to any part of the Tulsa Metropolitan area easy. The Arkansas River, abundant trees, and rolling hills make Sand Springs a natural choice for living, working, and recreation.
Sand Springs is Oklahoma's only planned industrial town. In 1907, entrepreneur and oilman, Charles Page, sent Salvation Army worker, Brinton F. Breeding and a group of orphaned children and widows to his land west of Tulsa to begin a children's home and widow's colony. Building what some called a "folly," Page developed Oklahoma's only planned industrial town around his children's and widow's home.
The City offers a wide range of family recreational opportunities. There are thirteen parks, nine tennis courts, a baseball complex, a softball complex, and a soccer complex. There is also an 18-acre urban fishing lake, a municipal golf course with a rolling terrain, and a rodeo arena. Sand Springs offers family-style recreation for everyone with a variety of sports, special events and programs. Adult and adolescent sports programs are offered through the City Parks and Recreation Departments and the Salvation Army. Little league baseball, youth soccer, BMX bicycle racing, rodeo and softball are just a few of the activities at River City Park along the Arkansas River. The Plaza Community Center near downtown provides classes and local meeting, and the Sand Springs Senior Citizens Center is located downtown.
Sand Springs is less than fifteen minutes from Keystone and Skiatook lakes which are great venues for boating, fishing, and swimming. In addition, the nearby bald eagle roosting spots and the 1,300 acre Ancient Forest are significant natural amenities.
Neighborhoods featuring tree-lined streets, city parks, and an extensive trail system for walking, jogging, and cycling, offer recreational opportunities for people of all ages. The City of Sand Springs is committed to protecting and enhancing its natural amenities. No other city in the region offers such natural diversity only minutes from the Tulsa metropolitan area.
