About Owasso:
Known as “The City Without Limits,” Owasso consists of 10 square miles and is located approximately 5 miles north of Tulsa off of Highway 169 and east of Highway 75 North. The city’s population exceeds 33,000 within the city’s zip code area; however, Owasso’s school district serves nearly 40,000. Owasso offers the amenities of a large city while maintaining a strong sense of community in a hometown environment.
Owasso was first known as the Elm Creek Settlement, located in the Cooweescoowee District of the Cherokee Nation. On January 24, 1900, the name Elm Creek community’s name was officially changed to “Owasso,” an Osage Indian word, meaning "the end" or "turn around" - it identified the area where the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad line ended. In 1906 Owasso formally became a town under laws of the Indian Territory and was chartered as a city in 1972. Owasso's population remained at a few hundred people until the end of World War II when veterans came to the area for the developing aircraft industry, mainly the Tulsa Airport, located just south of Owasso. The aircraft and related industries brought families to Owasso from across the Midwest from 1950-1970 increasing the population into the thousands. In the past decade Owasso has been experiencing rapid growth again and is currently the fastest growing city in Oklahoma.
Owasso offers the small hometown atmosphere with big city advantages including a wide variety of businesses and services, a local weekly newspaper, library, Historical Museum, a local private airport located 3 miles east of Owasso, a retirement complex, two nursing homes and assisted living centers. There are several industrial and manufacturing businesses within minutes that provide hundreds of jobs to area residents.
Convenience and local recreation are spotlights to Owasso. The city offers championship golf, the largest public playground in the state, and over 2 million square feet of retail and dining. The Bailey Ranch Golf Club opened in August of 1993 as one of the premier championship public courses in this part of the Country. Community parks, local YMCA facilities and an 80-acre municipal sports-plex available for soccer, baseball and softball offer fun and relaxation to area residents. Additional recreational opportunities are conveniently located at one of the five lakes within 15-40 minutes drive. Miles of parks and walking/running trails, close proximity to lakes, a community skateboard park and mountain biking trails provide residents with many ways to enjoy the outdoors. Add outstanding schools to all that Owasso offers and “The City Without Limits" proves to live up to its motto.
