“The Town that Made Tulsa Famous.” Located just south of Tulsa on Highway 75, Glenpool has a rich heritage of history, vital to not only the Tulsa area, but also the entire petroleum industry. Located in Tulsa County and covering 9.3 square miles, the city of Glenpool is the home of what was once known as the world's largest oil field.
On November 22, 1905, Robert Galbreath and Frank Chesley, drilling for oil on farmland owned by Creek Indian Ida E. Glenn, created the first oil gusher in what would soon be known as the "Glenn Pool". At this time the Town of Glenpool did not really exist yet. What did exist was a cluster of 12 families in a settlement called Glenn. Then the burgeoning field got its name: it became known as Glenn Pool, taking its name from Ida E. Glenn. The oil field was the richest the world had yet known, making more money than the California Gold Rush and Colorado Silver Rush combined and making Oklahoma known around the world for oil production. Many people and businessmen have stated that Glen Pool put Tulsa on the map.
The Glenn Pool oil field was three miles wide and four miles long. More than 300,000,000 barrels have been taken from it. The small settlement of Glenn grew with the oil field. By 1907, it had jumped from the 12 families to over 3,000 people.
Glenpool is now the hometown for over 9,000 residents who love the feel and atmosphere of living in a 'small town' while having the attractions and features of a major metropolitan city only minutes away. Great educational opportunities, the latest and best of medical facilities, a variety of entertainment and culture, a major US Airport, and connections to interstate highways and turnpikes, all are within 15 minutes of anywhere in Glenpool. Glenpool is the site of a number of new housing subdivisions, containing a variety of choices in size and cost. A new Tulsa County Community Center is being designed for construction on a fifteen-acre site within the City limits, and over $500,000 is being utilized within the City for neighborhood enhancements, sidewalks, trails and other improvements.
