About Claremore:
“Sold on Claremore.” Claremore, setting of the classic Broadway musical, "Oklahoma" is located in Rogers County approximately 28 miles northeast of Tulsa. The city covers 12 square miles with a current population of approximately 17,000. Claremore is best known for the World known humorist, philosopher, movie star, roper, and writer - Will Rogers, America's most famous Indian cowboy born in 1879, north of Claremore in Oologah.
Over the past decade Claremore has experienced growth rates exceeding state averages. The geographic location of Claremore and the easy accessibility from major highways, turnpikes, airports, rail systems, and the proximity to the McClellar-Kerr Arkansas River Navigational System, Port of Catossa, and the Oolagah Lake allows Claremore to be the gateway to beautiful northeast Oklahoma. State highway 66 – the legendary “Route 66” - runs north and south through Claremore, and State highways 20 and 88 are also easily accessible. Downtown Tulsa is only 25-30 minutes to the southwest via the Will Rogers Turnpike, I-44.
Claremore was once part of a huge forest until Osage Indians, led by Chief Glahmo, came from Missouri and established a fur Trading Post along the Verdigris River in 1802. The Trading Post was on a 25 acre mound which came to be known as Clermont, a French word meaning "clear mountain." Soon thereafter, Chief Glahmo became known as "Chief Clermont." It was intended to name the town after Chief Clermont; however, due to a clerical error, the name was listed as Claremore, which is how Claremore got its name.
Claremore has so many historical attractions, and it is fitting that the historic downtown is home to over 450 Antiques and Collectible dealers, along with specialty shops featuring gifts, home décor, jewelry, tack, cosmetics, ceramics, and clothing. Residents enjoy raising their families and working in the hometown atmosphere where the superior quality of life is reflected in education, health care, recreation, shopping, civic organizations, and in area churches.
