Located in the Creek Nation in Indian Territory, Bixby was named in honor of Tams Bixby, a chairman of the Dawes Commission. Many settlers were attracted to the area by the rich river bottom land, and the city, incorporated in 1906, was built on the strength of rich farm lands. Agriculture had a major economic impact on the area. Oil also had an impact on the city during its early years. In 1913 a 1,000- barrel-a-day oil well was drilled south of the town, and the oil boom that followed boosted the economy for many years.

During the late 1930s, truck farming of vegetables replaced many of the cotton, wheat, and alfalfa fields. By 1941, Bixby became one of the major national shipping centers for produce. It became nationally known as “The Garden Spot of Oklahoma”, shipping cantaloupes, potatoes, radishes, squash, turnips, spinach and sweet corn all over the country.

Today many of the truck farms have become sod farms or housing additions, and the majority of people living in Bixby work in Tulsa; however, the days of Bixby’s earlier agricultural heritage are still celebrated. Although the downtown district's quaint shops recall a simpler past, today's Bixby supports an up-to-date infrastructure to help business compete and thrive. Numerous affordable housing options are available within Bixby's city limits.
